Pilot is Cars.com's Family Car of the Year

Posted: January 18, 2012  |  by: Blog Editor  |  source: Cars.com
One of the most reputable resources on all things automotive, Cars.com voted the 2012 Pilot Family Car of the Year and also winner of the $37,000 Crossover Shootout.

This year's Family Car of the Year is the Honda Pilot. With spacious seating for eight and a thoughtful blend of family-friendly features, Cars.com editors also picked the Honda Pilot as the winner of this year's $37,000 SUV Shootout). The Pilot has a nice balance of size, roominess, efficiency and versatility for even the busiest of families. Parents juggling life, work and multiple kids' soccer teams while trying to maintain a sense of sanity (good luck!) will have a true partner in the Pilot. Our editors appreciated the Pilot's large number of storage nooks to keep all the stuff families carry around well-organized. They also took note of the second-row seats that slide back and forth to increase the amount of legroom for either second- or third-row passengers. The second-row seats also tilt and slide forward easily for access to the third row. The Pilot's large cargo space features additional storage under the cargo load floor, and this SUV's great blend of available technologies will make life on the go just a little more pleasant. Despite its boxy appearance, which, by the way, contributes to an open-feeling cabin, the drive quality in the Pilot is a comfortable blend, without the body tilt and sway one would anticipate in such a tall SUV.

9 Hondas Earn Top Safety Pick by the IIHS

Posted: January 04, 2012  |  by: Blog Editor  |  source: Honda.com
First, Honda was J.D. Power and Associates' most awarded brand in the 2011 Initial Quality Survey and now Honda also has more top safety picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other brand with 9 Hondas and 3 Acuras.

Twelve American Honda models, including the all-new 2012 CR-V received the highest possible safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) under its more-stringent testing guidelines implemented last year. The IIHS award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover performance based on ratings in the Institute's tests. Announced by IIHS today, the Honda Fit, CR-Z, Insight, Accord, CR-V, Pilot and Ridgeline along with the Acura TL, TSX and MDX all earned the highest-possible score of GOOD in all four ratings, including the more rigorous roof-strength test. Earlier this year the all-new Civic and redesigned Odyssey earned the TOP SAFETY PICK, giving American Honda twelve 2012 TOP SAFETY PICK winners. "We're proud to have achieved IIHS TOP SAFETY TOP rating for nine new 2012 Honda models and three 2012 Acura models, making American Honda among the best in the industry with twelve vehicles with top-class IIHS safety ratings under their new, more stringent ratings protocols," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "In fact, 91% of American Honda vehicles sold in the U.S. are TOP SAFETY PICKS. This accomplishment is part of a concerted effort we have made to reassert the Honda brand as a clear leader in this area." Standard safety equipment on all Honda and Acura models include Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); side curtain airbags (some vehicles equipped with a rollover sensor as well); dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; a driver's front side airbag; and a front passenger's side airbag with an occupant position detection system. All 2012 Honda and Acura models recognized by the IIHS, with the exception of the Ridgeline, utilize the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. ACE is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment.

CR-V Nominated for N. American Truck of the Year

The all-new CR-V was a shoe-in for the nomination this year in the competitive truck segment.

In January 2011, the winners of the North American Car and Truck of the Year winners will be announced at the 2012 Detroit auto show. For trucks, the contenders are the BMW X3, Honda CR-V, and Range Rover Evoque. The awards are focused on new vehicles or models that have been significantly redesigned. A group of 50 auto writers from the U.S. and Canada do the judging based on design, safety, fuel economy, performance, and other criteria. The 2012 winners will be announced on January 9, just before the opening of press days for the show. Redesigned for 2012, the CR-V features updated styling, which is neither awe-inspiring or offensive—it is a solid, compact SUV; Honda is noted for its reliability, resale value, and clever packaging. Its interior is roomy and its fuel economy (23 city, 31 highway MPG) makes it a good contender in L.A. where fuel prices are well above the national average. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) i-VTEC® four-cylinder engine, which puts out 185 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The less-potent engine provides for the fuel economy; however, it can’t keep up with the BMW X3. It is a good choice for those that prefer fuel economy over performance. Base price is around $22,000.

Honda had seven models ranked number one this year by the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey, more than any other manufacturer.

Honda is the highest-ranked Non-Premium nameplate in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Initial Quality Study℠ (IQS)—a benchmark study of new-vehicle quality after 90 days of ownership. Honda is the highest-ranked Non-Premium nameplate in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) —a benchmark study of new-vehicle quality after 90 days of ownership. The study has been conducted annually for the past 25 years. Expected reliability continues to be the single-most-important reason why new-vehicle buyers choose one model over another. Honda earns seven initial quality segment awards—more than any other brand in the study this year and the most the brand has ever received—and three awards for plant quality. In all, Honda earns seven model awards in the 2011 IQS for the Accord, Crosstour, Fit, Element, and Ridgeline, as well as the Insight and Civic in a tie. The Crosstour, an all-new model in 2010, and the Accord receive awards for a second consecutive year. In the Compact Crossover/SUV segment, Honda achieves the first and second rank positions for the Element and CR-V. The Odyssey ranks second in the Minivan segment. Historically, Honda has performed well in the Initial Quality Study, placing among the top 10 brands in the study during 21 of the past 25 years. In addition, Honda received the most model-level IQS awards among nameplates in 3 earlier years: 1997 (tie), 1998, and 2008. The 2011 U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 73,000 purchasers and lessees of new vehicles. The study is based on a 228-question battery designed to provide manufacturers with information to drive continuous product improvement. Consumers use highlights of study findings in their shopping and purchase decisions. The 2011 study was fielded February-May 2011.
